With social responsibility being an integral part of our mission, and our commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity, we find ways to extend our support and positively impact our societies to create gender balanced learning and skilling opportunities for the future.
The World Bank says that girls' education is one of the best investments that a country can make. It helps to positively impact 9 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. India has around 4.15 million female adolescents who are out of school (2013, UNESCO report) and around 65% female literacy rate versus 80% male literacy rate (source: The World Bank feature Story- ‘Working for Women in India’, March 8, 2019) signifying gender inequality in access to education.
Girls’ education goes beyond getting girls into school. It is also about building an equal world, having the opportunity to complete all levels of education and acquiring knowledge and skills to succeed in an evolving world, making decisions about their own lives; and contributing to their communities, society and the world. It is about the strategic development of our society.
EMPOWERING GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN, is an equitable step towards building a society that creates equal opportunities for education of girls and skill development of young women. Many girls face barriers to education caused by poverty, cultural norms and practices, poor infrastructure, violence, and fragility.
With this program we aim to improve lives of 2000+ girls and young women every year, by supporting their learning and skilling journey, thereby creating a path for them to improve their lives, uplift their communities, positively influence culture and the world.
What do we do?
Every Tata Starbucks store supports a girl’s education. These girls are based out of rural and educationally backward villages across 20 districts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. We are partnering with the NGO Educate Girls to improve the lives of these girls, by sponsoring the costs of enrolment, and retention in schools for the girls, ensuring improvement of their learning (literacy & numeracy) outcomes and sustained education of the girls.
Our partners are also invited to voluntarily contribute in sustaining the education of the girls supported by their respective stores. Our efforts ensure that with addition of every new store in India, we create more opportunities to support and sustain a girl’s education. In addition to this, our partners also invest their time and effort to support the education of children in partnership with the NGO Vidya Integrated Development for Youth and Adults. In this partnership, there is a great focus placed on girls, who are often the most vulnerable members of families that relocate from villages to the cities, but who also are believed to hold the keys to a true social change.
The EMPOWERING GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN program invites our partners to volunteer to teach essential numeracy, literacy and life skills to the girls, help the teachers make online classes more effective and contributing to the awareness and welfare of the children's parents, with a view to then expand to helping the youth and communities in future.
